An educationist, visionary and administrator par excellence, and, above all, a great human being, Professor Anil Kumar Sarkar was equally well known as a great institution builder. He played a key role in the creation of a number of distinguished organizations and institutions and contributed significantly by imparting his valuable ideas, resourcefulness, skill and multi-tasking abilities. At the University of Calcutta, he contributed immensely for more than three and a half decades as teacher, researcher, research guide, administrator, policy advocate and constructive policy critic (1966-1996) until his retirement. He held the high offices of General Secretary and Treasurer in the Asiatic Society Calcutta from mid-1980s to the middle of 1990s and expanded its activities in several new dimensions.
Till his last breath, he had an abiding involvement with a number of organisations, especially with LIFE, the last one established by him, his swansong. As the Founder-President, he chaired the annual general meeting of LIFE for the last time only a few days before his passing away. He has left behind for his flag bearers in this fledgling organization a rich storehouse of his unfulfilled dreams, valuable ideas, lessons and his gospel for moving forward.
